Mentoring for Performance & Sport: interpreters, translators and Deaf performers

One-to-one guidance. Practical skills. Support that adapts to you.

Mentorship at PI Training Academy gives you access to experienced performance interpreters who know the stage, the festival, the rehearsal room...

Mentoring is optional, but we recommend it for interpreters at all stages.

What You Can Expect

  • A mentor chosen for their specialist experience
  • Honest, constructive feedback on your work
  • Support shaped around your goals, challenges and preferred genres
  • A safe space to develop confidence and experiment with new approaches

How It Works

  • 1Initial call/session: explore goals, genre preferences, strengths, challenges
  • 2Flexible format: remote or in-person
  • 3Tailored focus: one-off sessions or ongoing mentoring
  • 4Fees: set by each mentor, typically £45-£60 per session

*Mentoring is independent of PI and does not guarantee work - but the skills you gain will strengthen your freelance practice across any setting.

Some interpreters may also be invited to mentoring as part of our Personalised Pathways programme, which identifies specific areas for growth and provides structured routes forward.

Mediation Support

When conflict needs a neutral hand

Independent, impartial mediation for interpreters, teams or organisations working through disputes. A different service from mentoring, available through PI Academy.

Labyrinth Supervision

Professional Supervision

Supervision through Labyrinth

We recommend that all interpreters explore professional supervision. It's distinct from mentoring: not about developing interpreting techniques, but about reflecting on the emotional, ethical and professional dimensions of your work.

Supervision provides a confidential space to process experiences, maintain boundaries and build resilience, helping interpreters sustain both their wellbeing and the quality of their practice over a long career.

Labyrinth is a directory of British Sign Language Interpreters who've qualified as Professional Supervisors, established by the first cohort to train with 360 Supervision. Independent of PI Academy, but aligned with everything we believe about looking after interpreters.

Mentoring FAQs

How does PI Academy mentoring work?
You start with an initial call to explore your goals, genre preferences, strengths and challenges. Then your mentor shapes the format around what you need — one-off sessions for a specific project, or ongoing work for deeper development. Sessions can be remote, in person, or based on video feedback and live observation.
How much does mentoring cost?
Fees are set by each mentor, typically in the £45–£60 per session range. You arrange payment directly with your chosen mentor.
How do I choose the right mentor?
Browse the mentor profiles to see each mentor's specialist domains (theatre, festivals, music, drag, comedy, political, sport, media, Deaf performance). Reach out directly to the mentor whose specialisms align with your goals; if you're not sure, contact us and we'll help you decide.
Will mentoring lead to work with Performance Interpreting?
No — mentoring is independent of PI's booking work and doesn't guarantee future bookings. But the skills you build will strengthen your freelance practice across any setting.
How is mentoring different from a Personalised Pathway?
Mentoring is a direct one-to-one relationship between you and a mentor of your choice. A Pathway is a structured development plan we shape with you, then match you with the right mentors or supervisors based on your goals, with mentors feeding back to us so we can keep your development on track.
What is mediation and how is it different from mentoring?
Mediation is independent, impartial support for interpreters, teams or organisations working through workplace or professional disputes — a different service from mentoring. We have CMC and DRA registered mediators available through PI Academy.
