Course Overview

The Theatre Rehearsal Interpreting Course equips RSLI's & TSLI's with the skills and techniques needed to effectively support communication and creative collaboration in theatre rehearsal settings.

This course provides an in-depth understanding of the interpreter's role within rehearsal spaces where Deaf and hearing creatives work together. The course focuses on new writing, R&D processes and technical rehearsals, aiming to build confidence, establish clear professional boundaries and develop strategies for effective collaboration. Interpreters will learn how to support communication and creativity between Deaf and hearing team members, ensuring accessible and inclusive theatre-making for all.

What the Day Covers

This practical course explores how interpreters can effectively support communication and creativity in rehearsal spaces where Deaf and hearing artists collaborate. Through real examples, role play and guided discussion, participants will develop the confidence and sensitivity needed to work as part of an inclusive creative team.

The course will cover:

⮞ BSL Techniques in Theatre: exploring visual storytelling, character embodiment and spatial expression in sign language to match creative intention.

⮞ Working in Integrated Teams: understanding communication flow between Deaf and hearing creatives and adapting to varied working styles.

⮞ Supporting Hearing Creatives New to Deaf Environments: strategies for introducing Deaf awareness, explaining interpreter roles and creating a supportive communication culture within the team.

⮞ Practical Role Plays: simulating real rehearsal situations such as script readings, devising sessions and R&D collaborations.

⮞ Incident Examples: discussing real-life challenges that arise in integrated rehearsals and exploring effective, ethical solutions.

⮞ Collaborative Communication: developing teamwork, turn-taking and negotiation skills between interpreters, directors, actors and stage staff.

⮞ Boundaries and Self-Care: maintaining professionalism, managing energy and supporting healthy team dynamics.

⮞ Tech and Production Rehearsals: learning how to interpret effectively during fast-paced transitions, cues and scene changes.

On completion of the workshop, interpreters will have:
  • Understand the interpreter's role and responsibilities within mixed Deaf and hearing creative teams.
  • Apply effective BSL interpreting techniques in rehearsal, R&D and technical settings.
  • Demonstrate strategies for clear communication and collaboration between Deaf and hearing creatives.
  • Recognise and manage professional boundaries in creative environments.
  • Respond confidently to challenges or misunderstandings that may arise during rehearsals.
  • Promote Deaf awareness and inclusive practice within theatre-making processes.
  • Reflect on their own interpreting practice and identify areas for continued development.

What past participants say

Feedback collected from interpreters who've completed this course.

Nadia was a great trainer and presented in a very engaging way. The discussions were interesting and gave us a lot of food for thought. The practical exercises were fun and useful, and getting us to practise all at the same time reduced the fear of being watched and judged.
The practical exercises gave me insight into what it's like to interpret for Deaf actors, especially in the run-up to a show (set-up, rehearsal, reading etc). It also helped identify technical and interpreting challenges and ways to handle these as they arise.
The practical workshop elements showed us how to tackle real challenges. Very informative and incredibly honest — helpful to know what to expect.
