Course Overview
This course is specifically for RSLIs, RSLTs, TSLIs and TSLTs who want to explore interpreting for drag queen performances in a safe, supportive and creative environment.
Drag is bold, irreverent, emotional and rooted in queer history and culture. This course offers a rare opportunity to engage with the unique demands of interpreting in drag settings - including lip-sync, character, comedy and audience interaction.
The workshop begins with a look at the cultural and political roots of drag before diving into practical strategies for interpreting this highly performative and fast-paced artform. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe and interpret live material, with guidance and feedback throughout.
What the Course Will Cover
- A brief history of drag and its cultural context
- Understanding drag queen performance styles
- Interpreting humour, innuendo and characterisation
- Working with music: interpreting lyrics vs. energy and mood
- Managing improvisation, heckling and audience interaction
- Visibility, placement and performer collaboration
- Hands-on interpreting practice with a live drag performer
- Tips and reflections from Martin’s lived experience as a performer and interpreter
On Completion of the Workshop, Participants Will Have:
- Explored the cultural landscape of drag performance
- Practised strategies for interpreting comedy, music and improvised performance
- Participated in individual and group exercises to develop expressive, confident interpretation styles
- Gained real-time feedback from an experienced performer and interpreter
- Increased their awareness of performance visibility, collaboration and audience expectations

Joining instructions will be sent one week before the course start date.
This course is delivered in English. (BSL delivery and interpreter available on request)
Course approved by NRCPD with 5 Structured CPD points being awarded to attendees - a certificate will be provided upon completion.

About Martin Fox-Roberts
Martin initially trained as an Actor at Arts International, York. After working professionally for five years in both TV and theatre, he set up his own business in theatre promotions.
Now based in London, Martin is a former Theatre Manager at Battersea Arts Centre (BAC). He currently works as a registered British Sign Language interpreter and a highly sought-after celebrant.
